Flipping a drop hitch?

I need a taller hitch for my RV to tow our enclosed trailer. Is there any issue with turning a 3" drop hitch upside down?

RE: Raising E450 chassis motorhome?

After looking at the RV closely, I think I will be able to up size the tires without lifting the RV suspension. I was thinking of going up two inches total but I think the taller sidewall will would be an issue with 16s. The 17.5" tires come in a taller size I'd imagine.

31ss additional battery question

For the time being I am looking at adding a second 12 volt battery the same size as the stocker. If I run two cables from the existing battery to the new one, will they charge evenly? Eventually I'll move up to two bigger batteries, but this is quick fix should get us through until I have more time and money.

RE: Raising E450 chassis motorhome?

Yeah, ours sits pretty level, but I could use some ground clearance overall.

RE: Raising E450 chassis motorhome?

Here is some old pics during the winter while I was repairing my floor, notice I have the hot h2o heater out?. After reading some of the above post I wanted to clear up I do not have a Ford but a Dodge class-c. I was just FYI that tires and wheels might be a way to go. Anyway here is a some pics of my rig with 19.5 wheels and tires giving good ground clearance on a Class-C.

Good luck and hope everthing works out, Robert
What size did that rig come with from the factory?

RE: Raising E450 chassis motorhome?

Thanks. How much taller are the 19.5 than the 17.5? If i can get our rig raised up to clear the bigger wheels, they would give us more ground clearance. Berticus, I sent you a PM to see if you could send or post some pics.

RE: Jayco Greyhawk 31ss

We've had our 08' 31ss for a while now. No real problems to speak of. This was our first motorhome after having several toy hauler trailers and fifth wheels. I think Jayco still has better quality than several other manufacturers out there. We pull a good sized enclosed trailer, so i opted for the Banks Power Pack. Overall we're happy with the rig. It could use a little more space in the shower and more water capacity.

RE: Raising E450 chassis motorhome?

Why can't you just use taller tires .... not wider, because you don't want the rear dual's sidewalls touching .... but just taller? The E450 has plenty low enough gearing in the rear differential such that you will not notice the very small power or pulling loss from using larger diameter tires.
For instance, I've ran two sizes larger than stock on my PU for years to get it higher off the ground. I went as tall as I could go without the tires hitting any body parts when turning or going over bumps. I don't see any reason why you can't do the same on an E450 based motorhome.
I have 19.5 wheels and tires on mine and I have plenty of clearance. However I do have 4x4 aswell which gives me even more clearance.
Safe and Happy Camping, Robert.
Where did you get the 19.5" rims that fit a Ford? I think those wheels and tires would help with the weight of the coach too.

I figured on going up to maybe a 245/85 series 16" tire after the lift.

RE: Raising E450 chassis motorhome?

I have read on this forum more than once. You can add helper springs to your rear stock springs to get a couple extra inches of ground clearence in the back. Another more expensive but adjustable means, is air bags. Both will make the ride rougher, though the air bags, you can let out the air when the extra clearence is not needed. Helper springs are cheap though.
Maybe people with helper springs or air bags will provide you with better insight on expectations.
Any change in shocks will not affect the height. Only handling & ride.
I never heard anyone increasing the height of the front end.
I have the Helper springs already, they work well in taking the extra load of the hitch weight of our trailer. I wouldn't want any more height in back, without matching it up front. I saw kits for air bags both front and rear, but I don't think they will give me much more height. I'd imagine someone makes a simple bolt up kit for the front. If I remember correctly it's a solid axle of some sort. The shocks would have to be longer if the unit was lifted, I didn't expect any addidtional ride height from them.

RE: Adding an extra fresh water tank?

I was looking to add extra fresh water capacity too. I have a 50 gallon tank and a pump I installed on our enclosed trailer. When we get low on water, I can refill the OEM water tank from the trailer. No extra load on the chassis that way. It also comes in handy for using our pressure washer at the races.

RE: Raising E450 chassis motorhome?

Yeah, I can't swing that mod. I was hoping for a simple block kit and maybe some longer, upgraded shocks. Konis would be nice. I haven't looked at the front suspension to see what it would take.

Raising E450 chassis motorhome?

Has anyone here heard of a way to lift an E450 chassis RV? We're looking for a couple inches of ground clearance for some of the areas we camp at.

RE: Banks Power Pack System

I have a Banks Power Pack on my 2006 Triton and it is the second best aftermarket addition that I have made to my coach. As noted above, what I wanted was increased low end torque and acceleration. We tow a car and drive in the mountains a lot and the increase in performance on hills and mountains is significant (to me). I do not see any increase in MPG. However, I probably put my foot in the carb more now.

RE: Battery upgrade?

Does anyone know which charger comes in a 2008 Jayco Greyhawk 31ss? We have a 400 watt Xantrex inverter. I'm not sure if it's part of the charging system or not.

Battery upgrade?

Our 31ss came with one smallish 12v house battery. It won't even run our 400 watt inverter for a full length DVD. What's my best option for an upgrade? I've been looking at two large 6 volt golf cart batteries run in series, adding another 12 volt battery, or upgrading to a crazy expensive over sized 12 volt battery. In every case, I'll have to either modify and expand the existing battery box or add a battery somewhere else. it looks like the two 6 volts will give me the best amp hour rating for the money. Also what brands are best? I'm looking at Trojan, Exide, Interstate and I can't recall the exotic 12 v gel cell brand.

RE: Added Bilstein Shocks-WOW

Are the Bilstiens better than Konis? I want to upgrade out 31SS soon. It wanders and bounces pretty good, but not as bad a the Super C's we were looking at before we bought the 31ss. The fist trip out, I noticed we lost the nut and bushings off one side of the rear sway bar. Once that was fixed it was better, but it could still be more stable.

RE: Class C MPG

You guys with V10 engines and the 55 gallon Ford tank with them might want to be aware of something that makes it tricky to accurately measure your mileage.
My 55 gallon tank is VERY DIFFICULT to fill up to the same point with each gas stop. I cannot go by the automatic stop on gas station nozzles. The only way I can consistently fill it back to what I think is very close to 55 gallons - and hence get consistent values for mileage calculations - is to trickle fill my tank until just short of spilling gasoline out the top of the fill tube.
This takes around 10 minutes longer to fill up and can only be done with some fueling nozzles. If I don't do this, my tank is never full - maybe only around 49 or 50 gallons in it - and it most likely gets filled to a level that varies plus or minus 1 or 2 or more gallons with each refueling ... depending upon the shutoff control's sensitivity for any given station's fuel pump nozzles.
Good point. It took a few more minutes to top mine off from 50 gallons to 54 gallons. We've only done three trips in our Jayco 31SS with the V-10. I don't know what gearing it has. we tow a 7x16 enclosed trailer with dirt bikes, gear, tools and a 53 gallon fresh water tank. The first trip I hand calculated 5.7 MPG, but don;t think the tank was fully topped off to start. The next trips were between 6.5 and 6.9 MPG. I used the tow/haul mode less, so it would up shift a little sooner on the highway and I think that helped. I drive 70-75, most of the time, so I figure my mileage could improve alot if I slowed down. I'll probably install a programmer to help with getting over the hills. We drooped to 45 MPH in a couple places last trip. :(
